Faux Apple Pie – A Healthy Dessert

This sweet, surprisingly-decadent faux apple pie recipe will help you cut added sugars from your diet without the feeling you’re missing out!

If you’ve been following along with my Small Steps for Success Challenge, you may find yourself trading out traditional sweets, like cookies and cakes, for natural sugars in fruit. This seems like an easy swap, but breaking the sugar cycle can be the stuff of nightmares!

Refined and concentrated amounts of sugar can wreak havoc on your body. Not only is it full of empty calories that can contribute to weight gain, refined sugar causes insulin to store body fat, and in the process, puts you on an energy roller coaster leaving you feeling hungry and irritable all day long. NOBODY NEEDS THAT!

The biggest problem I have with sugar is its addictive quality. While studies vary and have yet to prove the true addictive quality of sugar, I know from experience that once I have something sweet, I tend to crave more and more. When I eat fruit throughout the day to satisfy that sweet craving, I feel happy, full and have a steady stream of energy to get things done all day long. No more afternoon slump, no more falling asleep on the couch at 7pm (most of the time!).

This Faux Apple Pie recipe is quick, easy and satisfies the most carnal sweet cravings. Traditional apple pies use Macintosh or other soft, sweet apple varieties, but I use whatever is on hand (usually Gala or Pink Lady). I have always loved apple pie, and if you do too, this recipe is a definite win!

Faux Apple Pie

  • 1 medium apple of choice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground clove
  • Pinch of salt (to enhance sweet flavor)
  • 1 tbsp chopped pecans (optional)
  1. Peel apple if desired, cut into small slivers with a paring knife.

  2. Place in a microwave-safe bowl and mix in spices.

  3. Microwave uncovered for 1 minute.

  4. Let stand in microwave for a minute before removing.

  5. Sprinkle chopped pecans along the top.

  6. Serve immediately.
