What is the average cost to see a nutritionist?

You want to improve your diet with the help of a qualified professional. But you want to know, what is the average cost to see a nutritionist regularly while you build healthy lifestyle habits that match your health and wellness goals? Read on for the answer!

What’s the difference between a nutritionist and registered dietitian?

The cost to see a nutritionist depends on that professional’s credentialing. In most states, anyone off the street could call themselves a ‘nutritionist’ and open up shop, even without qualifications. This is obviously concerning from a quality-of-care standpoint, but in terms of billing, a nutritionist is not recognized as a qualified provider by insurance companies. All services would need be paid out-of-pocket.

A registered dietitian is credentialed by the American Dietetic Association after a rigorous program including a 4-year degree, 1200-hour practice internship and as of January 2024, a masters degree.

A registered dietitian can credential with individual insurance companies (including Medicare) to provide services to patients. However, registered dietitians are not required to take insurance. Some might require out-of-pocket payment and provide a superbill to send to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

What services are covered by insurance?

At this time, Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is the only services covered by insurance companies.

MNT is nutrition-based treatment that uses evidence-based strategies, education, and counseling provided by a registered dietitian (RD) to manage or treat medical conditions.

MNT for many health conditions is covered by insurance, including overweight/obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and  pre-diabetes or diabetes.

Telehealth is a widely-accepted form of treatment by insurance companies, allowing patients to receive convenient care from the comfort of their own home. Most insurance companies cover telehealth services the same as in-person treatment.
